Adaptation

Face life on life's terms

The Situation

Everything changes, gradually or suddenly, predictably or unexpectedly, but always eventually.

Remaining true to our self through cycles, shifts and renewal demands of us to adapt, to face life on life terms. It involves staying in tune with what is possible now, what we need now, what is available now, what we are available for.

Adaptation places our attention on being present rather than fighting, adjusting our bearings rather than carving our way through, trusting our ability to respond to our circumstances rather than executing a plan.

Of what we can foresee, we retain the permission to not know yet, the readiness to listen, the certainty that our journey is not a straight higher, farther, faster trajectory, but a windy and cyclical exploration.

It redefines success as progress, as a ‘staying’ with our purpose through the seasons.

Changing Lines

No Changing Line

As we grow comfortable in our identity, our endeavours and our territory, new choices - and challenges - are presented to us.

Our guide through these times is our purpose; committing to the fulfilment of our goals, what gets us closer, or serves the long term goal.

As we broaden our openness to new possibilities, solutions, and perspectives , we find the company, support and communion with the ever changing flow of life.

Line 1 - SOME SAY ROUTINE IS LETHAL

In familiar settings, our discomforts keep us company. We don’t quite feel trapped until we reach for the way out.

When the bounds of the life we live come into view, the illusion shatters and suddenly, cosy is suffocating and mastery is boring.

We don’t have to throw the baby out with the bath water, but we do have to take stock that we have exhausted the possibilities of our current circumstances.

Line 2 - FIRST DAY OF THE REST OF YOUR LIFE

The day we choose to take new action, adopt a new perspective, a new attitude, and let go of the old, is the beginning of a new chapter.

We can’t wait for the new chapter to have a new life, we start a new life to open a new chapter.
And no, we can’t know it will work until we’ve tried, and we don’t know what we’ll change to until we act differently.

The choice we make can just be to change, and that, we are sure can happen.

Line 3 - DON'T TURN INTO A WIND VANE

One occurrence doesn't make a pattern. Being present and available to the flow doesn’t changing our identity with the mood.

In listening with alarm to every event, for something to respond and adapt to, we will only end up startled and directionless.

Adapting our bearings, views and plans has merit in response to actual change, and actual change is not a one time incidence, it is the new ‘predictable’ way things work - for now.

As a rule of thumb, a count of three makes a pattern.

Line 4 - CHANGE WHAT’S NOT WORKING

We don’t have to keep doing something that’s not working. It comes as a shock, that promise of freedom, but it’s true.

Change is a decision, an embracing of freewill, whereby we don’t have to stay the same and feel growingly overwhelmed by an ever changing world.

Who we are is defined by our actions, our habits, our choices. When we change those, we become the person with the new choices.

Line 5 - ADAPTATION IS POWER

Attachments to definitions, plans and labels keep us in shackles. When we dare to adapt, grow, trust our gut and the nudging of the universe, we have access to infinite power.

The willingness to grow and be responsive to our circumstances is the key to our strength, it unleashes our power, manifests direction and purpose, it is attracts trust and following.

A lucky guess or a wise forecast is worthless unless we show up to seize the day.

Line 6 - CHANGE IN SUBSTANCE

Appearances count, and can need an overhaul, so that they match the substance.

Changing appearances in place of the substance is another shape of instant gratification, it is dishonest, and falsely effective. Eventually the truth catches up with us.

Actually adapting, relevant growth, is a process and a learning. It is gradual and hard to gauge... but nothing can take our progress back.
